Akiyoshi-dai Plateau (Yamaguchi Pref., Japan)

Akiyoshi-do Cave
This is a sump so called "Kotoga-buchi" in a famous show cave in Japan, Akiyoshi-do, natural monument. Some cave divers explored from here and discovered seven new chambers. It have been explored about 8.7 km of the cave, but now the exploration is continuing.
Kagekiyo-do Cave
Kagekiyo-do Cave, natural monument and show cave, is at the northern part of Akiyoshi-dai. This picture was taken at Dounaiko-shido, that means Passage of Lake. Very flattened ceiling is beautiful.
Nakao-do Cave
Well developed formations in Nakao-do Cave. Nakao-do Cave is a natural monument because formations (stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and gours) are well developed. The special permission is need to go into this cave.
Ryugu-ana Cave
Ryugu-ana Cave is in Ikari polije, Mito town. The entrance has been known since olden days, but when an enormous drought had come to Akiyoshi-dai, few years ago, the cave lakes in this cave was parched, then new passages were discovered.
Terayama-no-ana Cave
Terayama-no-ana Cave is one of the most famous cave in the Akiyoshi-dai. This pool is pictured in Third Main Chamber which has four large underground lakes.

Yurino-no-ana Cave

A thick stalagmite is in Yurino-no-ana Cave. This cave is composed of large passages, many bats and a lot of guanos.

Yobi-ne-no-ana Pit Yobi-ne-no-ana Pit has two large entrances opened as about 40 meters drops. At noon, the beautiful scene becomes since the sunshine illuminates the cave floors and walls.  

Okazaki-no-ana Pit

Okazaki-no-ana Pit is a Pit cave about 100 meters deep. This is the third pitch from the entrance. This hall is well decorated, but many formations are broken by burglars of stalactites.

Naga-ana Pit

Naga-ana Pit has one of the deepest pitch in Japan. The pitch is about 90 meters in vertical, and the last 30 meters is a large dome like situations. On the floor of the pit, stalactites and stalagmites are well developed.

Shishi-no-nuke-ana Pit
Shishi-no-nuke-ana Pitis a vertical pit connected to Kagekiyo-do Cave, a show cave in Mito Town. The Depth of Shishi-no-nuke-ana Pit is about 80 meters. Some terraces are divided the pit.

Kano-ide-no-tateana Pit

White and delicate formations in the Kano-ide-no-tateana Pit. White formations are very few in Akiyoshi-dai. Old cranial bones of Japanese macaque is coverd by flowstone on the floor.
